SAVF (Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie) Cecilia van Wijk is the oldest nursery school in town. When it opened its doors in October 1960, times they were a’ changing. A woman’s role was still only that of homemaker and mother, and few had ventured out into the working arena. But someone saw it coming. And she had a plan. Cecilia was born in 1911 and grew up in Carolina. Armed with a diploma in cookery from Pretoria Training College, she married Jack van Wijk, station commander at Nelspruit Police Station, staunch Nationalist and later mayor of the town. In 1940, she joined the local branch of the South African Woman’s Federation (SAVF). She never looked back.
